How to Treat a Cat with an Eye Infection

Treating a cat with an eye infection can be challenging for both you and your cat.  You want to administer the medicine and your cat just wants to be left alone. If diagnosed with a bacterial eye infection by your veterinarian you will be given either antibiotic eye ointment or eye drops for your cat. Follow these tips to adminster them.

1. Approach your cat with a towel in hand and quickly wrap your cat in the towel.  The towel will prevent accidental scratches when your cat tries to get away. This will work best if you can get the towel wrapped so only your cat’s head is exposed.

2. Once wrapped, use your body to envelope your cat so she can’t slide backward to get away or slide sideways and make a run for it.

3. Talk to your cat in a soothing voice throughout the process. If she can see you’re not angry or stressed, she will likely be less stressed herself.

4. For eye ointment, grasp your cat’s head in your left hand (if you’re right-handed) and tilt her head up.  Squeeze the ointment onto her eyeball until about an inch of the ointment is on her eye.

5. For eye drops, tilt her head up and hold the eye drops above her eye. Squeeze until one or two drops (whatever is prescribed) hits her eyes.

6. Praise her for being very good and let her go.
